NARUTO 101: Tackling Misconceptions and Confusing Tales

Source: www.saiyanisland.com
Hey guys! Welcome back! Let's take a break from the anime reviews because recently I've been getting a lot of confused questions from friends regarding the Naruto fandom. Even if it recently ended last summer, I totally understand why people still do not get the show and I'm pretty sure the reason is quite obvious to hardcore fans. This is what you get when there are just so many filler arcs. This post is here to guide you on common tales and questions that made you confused (and possibly anxious) about the anime. I will be talking common stories and misconceptions that are causing people to speculate about many things, but still can't get a full conclusion to. This is also for fans who have not been following the show religiously, and are probably too lazy to get into it. Believe me, if you are into Naruto then you will need to understand that these types of fans exist for this particular show. Hopefully it will put everything into perspective, since everything that will be mention are definitely published in mangas, novels, and of course the anime. Fair warning though, there will be spoilers, so read at your own risk. Let's get into it!

Confusing Tale No. 1: NARUTO DIES??!?!?!?!?!

What you know: Everyone was "shooketh" by the first episode of Boruto, but for a very different reason. Kawaki, the presumed antagonist of the series, mentioned one particular line that made the world stood still.

"I'll be sending you to meet the 7th, Boruto."

Now just imagine Kawaki saying that in a very destroyed Leaf Village. If you must know, the seventh refers to the Seventh Hokage, who is of course Naruto. What did he do to him now and where is exactly Naruto at this certain moment? Unfortunately, we still do not know because the scene takes place in a very distant future and the series slowly introduces us to Boruto and the new generation in a slice-of-life family context.

The Truth: Speculations remain as speculations. My only guess is that this was created to give fans and possibly new viewers a reason to watch Boruto. In case you've seen artworks of Naruto bleeding to death, don't worry. Those are just fanart and Naruto is not officially declared as dead or incapacitated. There were interviews of Masashi Kishimoto, the original creator of Naruto, being confronted about this, but he said that the possibility was still there. According to him, he believes Boruto shouldn't be bound to Naruto for too long and believes death in a series can give some weight to the storyline. In short, he expects that the Boruto franchise should hold up on its own, and that the Naruto franchise can well...rest in peace.

Confusing Tale No. 2: What Happened to Kakashi's Sharingan?

What you know: To be honest, most people do not understand the fate of Kakashi and his sharingan. Some people assume he still has it, but others also think he doesn't since Madara Uchiha grabbed it from him before the epic battle with Kaguya.

The Truth: In the Boruto series, Kakashi no longer has a sharingan. The moment Madara took his sharingan, it was history. But he was able to use Sharingan on both eyes temporarily during the fight against Kaguya. This was because he was possessed by Obito's spirit and this was Obito's parting gift to Kakashi. With this, he was able to Susanoo and other cool tricks. But when the fight was over, the Sharingan disappears.

Source: You can watch this in the Naruto Shippuden anime itself, which occurs around Episodes 471-473. To see Kakashi in action without his Sharingan, I recommend reading Kakashi Hiden and Konoha Shinden, light novels that occur in between the events of Naruto Shippuden's aftermath and Boruto.

Confusing Tale No. 3: Did Itachi Have a Girlfriend?

What you know: Itachi had a lady friend in his life, Izumi Uchiha.

The Truth: Like most Uchiha romances, this one seemed a bit one-sided. In reality, Izumi had a crush on Itachi but it was never revealed if Itachi felt the same way. However, Itachi acknowledges her and this was proven when he decides to kill her first during his massacre. He decides to kill Izumi in a peaceful way by putting her into an Infinite Tsukuyomi, which made her think she was living the rest of her life as Itachi's wife when in reality she was dying. Here, Itachi thanked her for loving him. However the anime showed this scene differently. Instead, Obito killed Izumi so Itachi wouldn't have to.

Source: You can read the sad tale of Itachi Uchiha in Itachi Shinden: Book of Bright Light and Book of Dark Light. Itachi's story has also been animated as a filler in Naruto Shippuden as episode's 451-458.

Confusing Tale No. 4: Did Gaara get married and have a son?

What you know: In the Boruto film, you will see a young boy manipulating black sand and wears it like a black cloak. He also carries a puppet. He is revealed to be Shinki of the Sand, Gaara's son. This is one Naruto discussion that will not rest. Due to the blank period between the Hiden/Shinden Novels and Naruto Gaiden, many fans speculated how Gaara decided to adopt Shinki and if he was really adopted in the first place. There is also the matter of Gaara considering getting married for the sake of having an heir to the Kazekage tutelage in Gaara Hiden. Fans are arguing that he got married, the hiden novels are not canon, and a lot of things.

The Truth: For now, Shinki is presumed to be adopted. In the Boruto Manga, which did not show in the movie, Gaara and Kankuro have a scene where they talk to the Sand Siblings team about the Chuunin exams and Shinki refers to Gaara as an adopted father in chapters 3 and 5. There is still no official story for Shinki's character yet, so his true origins have yet to be revealed. Also Gaara is not married. In Gaara Hiden, he considered the idea of getting married and was engaged to a girl named Hakuto Hoki. Unfortunately for Gaara, she was in love with someone else and he decided to help her elope with him. In the end, he insisted to the council he doesn't need a wife for the time being. Yes, this is the story we know but then...BUT THEEEN everyone is forgetting there was another girl that accompanied Gaara throughout this entire light novel. Her name is Shijima Hoki, who is the bodyguard and older sister of Hakuto. She was also revealed to be an experiment of Orochimaru's, because she has an incomplete Sharingan as her kekkei genkai. Long story short, Gaara learns of Hakuto's elope plan through Shijima and they work together to make it happen. In the end, Shijima decides to serve Gaara as his confidante. So to all the Gaara fangirls, don't get too comfortable. There's a girl in his life and things have yet to progress. Let's see how the Boruto creators will make of this.

Source: To check Shinki in action, you can see him in the Boruto film briefly. Thankfully there is a manga, so you can definitely see him with Gaara in chapters 3 and 5. To know more about Gaara and Shijima (because they have an interesting time together), you can read Gaara Hiden and see how they become good friends.

Confusing Tale No. 5: What does the term "Hokage" mean?

What you know: This is for my Filipino fans out there. Recently the term Hokage has been affiliated with people who tries anything to court a woman, usually in the most unconventional way possible. This has angered not only netizens, but also Filipino Naruto fans because it soils the true purpose of being a Hokage.

The Truth: If you must know, hokage's literal meaning is "Fire Shadow". Meaning this term was not originally created in the Naruto series! Let's take a look on the literal meaning, once more. Fire Shadow could also mean a type of shadow that can quickly move in the light of day. Now this sounds almost synonymous to what a ninja could do, hence the use of Hokage as a term for the strongest or most skillfull shinobi. Technically Hokage is a slang for people who are incredibly skilled to the point that they perform the skill or talent swiftly and almost silently. This is similar to calling your friend who has the "ninja moves" in class. The slang or urban definition is quite vague, as it really doesn't pertain to a certain talent or skill set. Eventually this was used in courtship, but it's the kind of courtship you would normally see in Asian dramas where the male can act pretty rude or sometimes perverted when romancing a lady. The real question lies in whether or not such a meaning soils the true meaning of being Hokage. For one thing, there is no such thing as a true meaning Hokage, unless we are referring to the literal one. This kind of term has been around outside the Naruto realm for a long time (probably longer than the Naruto franchise), but it does not mean we should tolerate such rude behavior. So again, Hokage is not a unique term to the Naruto series, rather it is a slang that is meant to refer to someone who is skilled or swift-like and nothing more. The way you want to view Hokage is up to your own discretion.

ALSO ONE THING YOU SHOULD KNOW! Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is NOT written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto. That's right. He is and always will be the creator of Naruto. The only Boruto project he has done was the movie itself. Right now, Boruto's anime and manga is being handled by a new set of people. Ukyo Kodachi is the writer, while Mikio Ikemoto illustrates the manga. Instead of Hayato Date, Noriyuki Abe (one of the animators of Naruto Shippuden), is now the director of the Boruto anime.  I believe Kishimoto is only a supervisor over this series, and has no control over its plot whatsoever. So let's wish the newbies good luck on this journey!

And that is it for Naruto 101, hopefully this clears out many confusing theories and subplots. If you have anymore questions, you may comment down below. So far, we now know that Naruto's death isn't set in stone as of late, Kakashi no longer has a Sharingan, Gaara is single and has adopted children, and Hokage is not a unique term to Naruto rather it is a slang term. Hopefully you guys enjoyed reading and I will see you till the next post~
