Ore Monogatari!! (My Love Story!!) || Anime Review

It has been a while since I did a review on a very simple anime, and it has been difficult for me to review anime shows with a "slice-of-life" genre because of how purposely shallow and straightforward the storyline and animation can be. But as a reviewer of anything anime, I think it would be fair to just be a bit more open-minded, and to give animes with a "slice-of-life" theme a try.

My Anime List

With school fast approaching, I think it is very timely to review another anime related to school...even if the show itself is barely about school. But for this post, I will be reviewing one of the most popular romantic anime shows, Ore Monogatari!! or also known as, My Love Story!! in English. Based on the romantic comedy manga series of the same name, Ore Monogatari was directed by Morio Asaka (Nana, Cardcaptor Sakura, Chobits, and Gunslinger Girl) and written by Natsuko Takahashi (Boys over Flowers 2, The Count of Monte Cristo the anime, Akatsuki No Yona). The studio for this anime is none other than Madhouse, a very well-known company that has produced a lot of great anime such as Death Note, Hunter x Hunter, One Punch Man, and so much more. If you haven't heard of Madhouse, then you're definitely not watching enough anime or even cartoons. Feel free to click on the highlighted term on Madhouse, and you will be directed to their website and educate yourself just a wee bit. So let's get started with this review, shall we?

This review is spoiler free.

Plot

Okay let me break it down for you; Goda Takeo is the all-around nice guy, the kind of person you'd like to be with. Unfortunately, he has never had any luck with girls because of not only his coarse appearance, but also because many girls swoon over his handsome best friend, Makoto Sunakawa. Takeo has made peace with that fact, that is until he meets Rinko Yamato, a girl who falls head over heels for him. And this is where his own love story begins. (source: Pinterest )

The story is quite simple, but then again that is always the case for anime with the romantic comedy element in place. What encourages you to keep on watching is the entertainment value of every episode, and the chemistry between different characters. In other words, we watch these types of anime because it is purely made for fun. And that's what this anime is...fun. The story follows his budding romance with a girl and in every episode you witness them gradually develop in their relationship. The comedy element is incredibly dependent on how Tadeo and Rinko interact with each other as a couple. The way they hold hands for the first time, go on dates, get on with their first kiss. This anime shows the makings and tropes in every relationship in the most comical and innocent way as possible. Another good thing about this show is that it doesn't go overboard with the comedy, and it knows when to tone down. There are times when the anime takes a break and puts other characters into focus and usually when this happens, the main characters are barely present in the episode. In this case, the main characters are still present in a way that they support the other characters in what they're doing. The dialogue is what gets me in this anime, though. It is hilarious and it gets exaggerated in the right places. Like I said, it doesn't go overboard, which I appreciate.

Score for Plot:

Characters

Goda Takeo and Rinko Yamato
The anime still has a couple of stereotypes, but they work differently in this particular anime. We have the bishounen introvert, Makoto Sunakawa, who plays as the sidekick and the best friend. Next, we have our main character, who you would least expect to have a stable love life. Finally, we have the sweet and kind Rinko, the love interest or the girl you would least expect for Tadeo to date. Believe me, this anime is harsh when it comes to judging his appearance. One particular development you will definitely notice is the way they handle and perceive relationships. Not a spoiler, but Tadeo's looks and worth to be the boyfriend of Rinko eventually does not get questioned and the story moves on to other things you would experience when you are in a relationship. The chemistry between Rinko and Tadeo is the most adorable thing you could ever witness, and its the kind of chemistry I have not seen in anime for a long time. This isn't the kind of story where you would expect the main character to dramatically mature by the end, but rather anticipating how the characters (given their distinctive traits) would react or behave at certain situations. I honestly think that's how most Slice-of-life animes go about with their characters and it sometimes works...that is, if your character knows how to balance the pros and cons of their personalities. But this anime can certainly do that.

The best way I can describe the characters in this anime is that they do not need major development, rather they know how to flaunt their flaws and strong points at the right time, to the point that you gradually care for the person in the process. A best example would be Takeo's best friend, Sunakawa-kun, who was a surprise for me in this anime. His character is definitely not like most bishounen males who are described as sheepish and cool. Sunakawa is literally sheepish and cool in a way that he does not make a big deal out of most things. He does not really progress like most of the characters, but there will be times when he is placed in a very awkward situation and it comes out as funny and occasionally pitiful because of the way he reacts to it. That's how you write characters, ladies and gentlemen.

Score for Characters:

Music

Everything you would normally hear in a Shojo anime, is all in this anime and I am honestly not mad about that. Because of these amazing and unusual characters, the music that you would normally expect in dramatic Shojo anime comes out funny. So whenever you hear the blossoming and sparkling sound effects, you sometimes cannot help but laugh. It does not have the best score, but it has the most suitable one. So all the sound effects are on point.

I honestly love the ending theme to this anime, and that is Shiawase no Arika or in English, Happiness' Hiding Place by Local Connect. It sums up what the anime is typically about and it has great guitar instrumentals.

Art

The animation is SHOJO AF. Everything is girly, sparkly, and SUPER DUPER PINK. I love it.

The softness and filters in animation, covers the characters in everything that they are, which makes it extra hilarious. This shot is one of my favorite looks of Tadeo because it pretty much captures everything that he is as a person. And the way he speaks is just funny. If there is anything the anime went overboard with, it is the flowers, the sparkles, and the brightness. This anime is probably not the best, but it is vibrant, colorful and very pleasing to look at. Everything about the colors make you feel so warm and happy. And I think that's what you want when you watch this, right? You want to be happy. This anime made me so happy.

Score for Art:

Ore Monogatari!! is anime filled with love, fun, happiness, and lots of sweetness. If you want something very straightforward and little to no subplots, this anime is definitely for you. In fact, I think this anime is for everyone because of the unconventionality it brings to the table.

ORE MONOGATARI!! HEREBY RECEIVES A

AND IS TAMAGO CERTIFIED

I don't care what you say; you are going to love this anime, especially if you are tired of the attractive people getting other attractive people bullsh*t other shows do. It is hilarious, not too cliche, but at the same time it is cliche for the damn right reasons. So give this a try if you still haven't, it will not disappoint.

And that is it for my anime review for Ore Monogatari, I still have a lot of anime to review just for you guys and other things as well. Till the next post~
